Guided Drawing
After all of the work we did on birds this week, the kids asked if
they could learn how to draw birds. So... we checked out Art Hub for kids
for some how to draw bird videos. They chose their birds and got to work!
Check out the finished products...
All about wingspan
To start off our unit on measurement and to get ready for our visitor
from the Pelee Island Bird Observatory we started talking about birds.
We read Grady the Goose....
We talked about migration and why birds might need to migrate.
Having the right kind of wings allows different birds to be more successful
when it comes to migration. So...we took a look at the wingspans of different birds.
We were shocked at how big the wingspans of some birds can be.
Miss Sarah came to visit and teach us more about birds...
The kids tested out different 'beaks' to see what kind of
beak was good for eating different foods.
They 'built' nests using just their beaks.
They listened to the songs of different birds and tried to identify
the stuffed animal birds by looking at their colours, beaks,
and other distinguishing features.
These are the bands they put on the birds they see on Pelee Island
that helps them track migration.
In this game, the students got to experience their own 'migration'
from North America to South America and back again.
As the game continued some of the 'flyway stops' were removed
(to mimic loss of bird habitats/sanctuaries).
They were left with the challenge to take care of birds by
creating or maintaining spaces for birds to rest. They could
have bird feeders in their yards, have a bird bath, or plant trees
and flowers to create bird habitats.
Next, it was time to learn how to use binoculars...
Thanks Miss Sarah and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory!!!
