Happy 100th Day & Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy 100th Day!

The students celebrated the 100th day when they counted up the candy gram money and realized they exceeded their goal of $100!  

They also participated in some other activities about 100.

Since we are studying animals in science, they made a list of 100 animal words.

Everyone wanted a necklace of 100 fruit loops!

The 100 cup structure challenge was a ton of fun!

Thank you to all of our families for supporting our 'old fashioned' Valentine's Day Celebration!

They loved passing our their valentine cards and they were all so proud of their hard work signing their cards.  

Some students chose to make valentine cards to bring home.

Other students used the tiny dollar store marble games and kept track of their score.

Thanks for sending in red fruit.  We made fruit dip from yogurt

and cool whip.

And of course....it was privilege day!  Dancing, PJ's, and stuffys!!

CANDY GRAM UPDATE

So...here is the update on the grade 2 Candy Gram Project!

Aside from being the most valuable experience of the year (this far...) in terms of social justice, responsibility, and accountability, this project covered so many curriculum expectations and gave the students a real life example of how to use and apply what they learn.  You may not have seen homework pages about this and there is not a lot of paper/pencil 'proof' of what they learned, but a conversation with your child and a look at these photos is all the proof we should need to know how much they learned in the last week or two. 

Curriculum Covered

*estimate, count, and represent the value of a collection of coins

*count by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 25's

*solve problems involving the addition of numbers

*describe relationships between quantities

*add and subtract money amounts

*identify, describe, and create patterns (of course the groceries are lined up in patterns in the classroom)

*organize objects into categories

*organize primary data in concrete graphs (of course we graphed our groceries!)

These are just some of the math expectations covered during this project.  This doesn't even include any literacy components (which were immense)!  So take a look at the photos, and know that your child worked hard at school.  Ask them about their experience, you might just be surprised at what they tell you!!!

 Here is a look at what we have been doing.  

The money was all sorted (as seen in a previous post) and ready to be counted.  Each group was given

a bag of coins to count.  One group counted loonies, another toonies, quarters, dimes, nickels, and another group was responsible for counting the bills.  

'4 quarters make a dollar, so let's put them in groups of 4 and then we can 

just count by ones to see how much money we have...'

'...wait, piles of 4 are best for quarters...'

'...counting toonies is just counting by 2's...'

'...what is $1 called again?...oh yeah, loonie...'

'...we have $150 in bills...'

'...first we counted the $20's then the $10's and then the $5's...'

'...start with the biggest numbers first...'

The grand total for Candy Gram sales was $411!!!!!!

Way to go Grade 2

It was decided before any money was raised that they were going to buy food for

 the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  So we walked to Freshco to buy some groceries.

Everyone got to buy one or two items (depending on how heavy they were)

from the list of items needed by the St. Vincent de Paul society.

The groceries will be dropped off tomorrow!

We still have some money left to use for another project...so stay tuned 

for our next social justice effort!!

CANDY GRAMS

As I started to plan for the 100th day of school, I asked the students what 

they would like to do to celebrate.  Of course they suggested all of the 

fun things they had seen and done in grade 1.  I challenged them to think

of something new since they were a year older.  Someone suggested counting 

$100.  We started talking about how we could get $100 (I could bring it in, 

they could bring it in, we could sell something, have a bake sale, have an

art sale, have a candy sale...etc.).  When someone suggested having 

a candy sale, the idea of the candy grams came to mind.  When asked what they

would do with the money, they didn't hesitate at all.  Someone immediately

suggested we donate the money to the poor.  So the decision was made!

They got to work making advertising posters, creating a jingle to sing

to make people remember to bring their loonies, and selling candy grams at

morning and afternoon recesses.   

Candy gram, Candy gram, it's Candy gram time,

Come and get yours right under our sign.

Give one to someone special yay!, 

All for Valentine's Day!

'Near the fountain is a good place because people stop here and wait 

their turn for a drink...'

'Everyone in the school goes to Mr. B's room for music...'

'The bathrooms are always busy...lots of people will see this...'

'...put it low because this is the fountain for the little kids...'

'Get it as high as you can, these are the grade 8 doors.'

Once the candy grams were sold, the students had to count candies to

make sure we had enough.

'Let's put them in groups of 10 so we don't get confused when we are counting.'

The candies had to be organized by class so they could be delivered

for Valentine's Day.

...And now for the money...

First they sorted the coins and bills.

'I've got all loonies.'

'I've got the dimes.'

'Some of these look different than the others.'

Valentine's Day INFO

Happy Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching.  Since Valentine’s Day is on Ash Wednesday this year, SJV will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday Feb. 9^th. We will be having an ‘Old Fashioned’ Valentine’s Day Party on that day.  By ‘old fashioned’ we mean, just a simple valentine card is gift enough!  Please have your child fill out their valentine cards in their own printing, as the card will mean more if they spend some time working on it.  A class list is being sent home so your child can address the cards to their friends if they would like.  This could be a time consuming process, so help your child plan ahead and do a few cards each day.

Please do not send in candy or treats.  Instead of treats, we are inviting the children to bring in any red fruit that they like (washed, cut, and ready to eat, brought in a ziplock bag) to share.  In the classroom, we will be making a special fruit dip for our red fruit!  Your child is also welcome to wear Valentine colours to celebrate the day as well.

To give more meaning to Valentine’s Day, the grade 2’s wanted to raise some money to share their love with those in need.  To raise money they are selling candy grams for $1.  This money will be used to go shopping as a class and purchase food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Please support our Candy gram initiative!
