We are working on making sentences that give the reader more information.  They are 

extending their sentences by using the word 'and' or 'because'.

Making a play-doh chart to sort nouns into person, place, thing, or animal.

Guided Reading - Reading a book that is 'just right' for them with 

direct instruction from the teacher.

Adding Activities

To practice basic math facts, each student found a partner.  Each partner 

flips a card, the cards are added together and a number sentence is recorded.  

8+7=15

The next activity was an activity to help show their learning about

adding doubles.  Each student built a 'train' of the same number in a different

colour (ex. both kids built a 4 block train, one red, the other blue).  When 

the trains are joined together you can see each number individually

and you can add them together. 

TRY IT AT HOME

Knowing the doubles facts can make it easier to learn other facts....'doubles

plus one' and 'near doubles' are two strategies that we will be working on soon.

Organizing Numbers

Today's task was to organize objects in order to make counting them easier.

They decided that putting the items into groups was a good idea.  Groups

of 2 or 5 or 10 would be good because it's easy to count by 2's, 5's, and 10's.  

'Let's do it in groups of 5...'

'...if we do it in groups of 2 I can count them...'

'...2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...'

'...We counted by 2's all the way to 40...there are 20 on this side and 20 on that side...'

'...we are going to count by 2's...'

'...we counted by 2's again all the way to 80...but maybe we could have counted 

by 10's or something to make it faster...'

'...we are counting by 5's and we colour coded it too!'

'...we have groups of 5 and 2 leftover...'

After everyone spend some time working on organizing and counting we talked about 

what made it easier and what made it harder.  They discovered...

*When you have a lot of items to count, count by a bigger number like 10's.

*When you have a smaller number of items, you can count by 2's or 5's.

*When you line up your piles you need to have a lot of room so they don't get mixed up.

Unit 2
Math: Number Sense and Numeration

In this math unit we are working with numbers, decomposing numbers, 

adding and subtracting numbers, and just learning more about numbers!

One of the first tasks the students were asked to do was to make a number line.  One card

for each student was scattered around the room and they had to find a card and figure

out where their number belonged.  

We worked on using vocabulary words like before, after, and in between.

'...six is after seven...you go here...'

Next, everyone was given a partner to play mystery number.

'...the mystery number is 67...it comes after 66 and before 68...'

'...89 is after 88...'

'...the first number is 23...it goes in between 22 and 24...'

'...cover your eyes while I pick the numbers...'
