Centers are Here!

Centers are Here!!

The students are starting to learn the routines, rules, and activities they can do in Literacy Centers.
It's a bit of a process to learn where to get the activities, how to set up, what do do while you are there, how to hand in work, and how to clean up your work space.  We started with all sorts of activities about words and they did awesome!!

They can make words using play-dough...

Mini pocket charts can hold words too...

Magnetic letters....

Letter jewels...

Using markers, coloured pencils, crayons, or just an ordinary pencil...

Once they learn each of these centers, your child will be able to choose which activity helps him/her learn the best.  This week they practiced using words from the word wall in the classroom (the word wall has words that are used frequently and words that are difficult to spell).  Eventually they will use their spelling words each week.

Fun Friday

As part of our Religion, Family Life, Drama, and Social Studies Curriculum we have been talking about how to be a good friend, how to solve small social problems independently, and how to get along as a group.  The students have been acting out situations that often arise in the classroom and on the playground at recess.  Some of the situations we have been talking about are tattle-tails, interrupting, using a friendly voice, and our perception of the actions of others (bumping into someone accidentally can be perceived as someone hitting you).  The students love being chosen to act out a scene and figure out how to respond to the situations.

Friday was such a beautiful afternoon, we took our acting outside.  When the work was done we had some time for playing on the equipment!  Take a look!!

outdoor patterns

Patterning
We are making patterns with one or two attributes that change (colour, shape, size, position)
We headed out to our outdoor classroom to gather materials to make our patterns.

The girls started with big stick, small stick, big stick, small stick.
They circled the pattern core with chalk (the smallest part of the pattern that repeats).

'Our pattern is brown leaf, yellow flower, green grass, brown stick...its a colour
 pattern and a shape pattern...'

'Look we circled the pattern core!'

'Our pattern has the colour change and the shape...'

Helping at Home
Encourage your child to make patterns with their toys.  Try to make a pattern that has 2 attributes that change.  (blond hair Barbie, pink Shopkin/ Tall Skylander, Small Lego Man)
