Thursday Morning

The students of 2-Paonessa and 2-Liburdi have been working hard to prepare for this Thursday's mass at SJV Church at 8:30am.  You are welcome to join us for mass on Thursday!  All students are invited to bring a canned good for the St. Vincent de Paul Society on Thursday.

Thursday Afternoon

The students will be taking part in a school wide walk/run in honour of Terry Fox Thursday afternoon.  Grade 2 students will be walking on the Ganatchio Trail and then returning to school.  Please send $2 as a donation. 

Friday 

Friday is our first FUN FRIDAY.  On FUN FRIDAY (last Friday of each month) students are invited to bring a small toy (something that fits in their backpack) from home that will be used for a special learning task.

Math Centers

As we finish up our unit on sorting and patterning, the students participated in 4 activity centers to practice everything they have learned.  

They made patterns grow...

They sorted on their own using two attributes!  They made up their own ideas and 

labelled their sorting circles.

'I have squares in one circle, yellow stuff in the other, and yellow squares in the middle.'

'This is blue stuff, this is squares.  In the middle is blue squares...it has both.'

'I got it!'

'It starts with 2 blocks on the bottom, then 3, then 4...'

'I think the shape changes and the colour too!'

'I had to make a pink circle for the middle...it had to be pink and a circle.'

'It's easy...look...first you add one more block to each side,

then you add two, then three...it just keeps going...'

'...you keep this part and add two blocks each time...'

'...I made the colour change, it's blue, red, blue, red...the shape changes too.'

Since this is the first unit and it's a short one, there will not be a formal written test.  

The students have clearly demonstrated their knowledge over the past three weeks

in the classroom.  They will have a written quiz that will be sent home for you to see this week.

Attributes, attributes, attributes!

Attributes, attributes, attributes!

Attributes can be ways to describe something in terms of on object's 

colour, size, shape, or position.  

The students are focused this year on how to create patterns where 

more than one attribute changes.  Take a look...

'The colour changes because it goes green yellow, green yellow...'

'...the position changes too...upside down, right side up...'

'In mine the shape changes like square, diamond, skinny diamond...the colour changes

too because it goes yellow, brown, blue, yellow, brown, blue...'

'...mine is yellow, blue, blue, yellow, blue, blue...and the shape changes too...'

'This has a lot because the shape changes, and the colour changes.'

'My pattern has 3 attributes that change...shape, colour and position because 

some of the red ones are upside down.'

TRY IT AT HOME...choose 2 attributes...or 3

(colour, shape, size, or position)

Use your toys and see what patterns you can make!

Draw it or write it down if you can.
