Adding Using Strategies

The students have been practising how to add numbers in their 

heads using different strategies to make the addition easier

and faster.  Some of the strategies you can ask your child about are:

Counting On:

 Put one number in your head and count up using a number line

 12 + 4 = 16

Doubles:

 4 + 4 + 2 = 

4 + 4 =8

8+2=10

Near Doubles: 

6 + 7 =

We know 6 + 6 =12

Since 7 is 1 more than 6 we need to add 1 more

12 + 1=13

Making Ten: 

  4 + 3 +6 =

 6 + 4 =10

10+3=13

Near Ten:

5 + 6+ 8 =

We know 5 + 5 =10

6 is one more than 5 so we need to add one more

10 + 1=11

11 + 8 =19
