SNOW DAY!

What did we do on our SNOW DAY?

Well...we had to get outside in the snow...it was knee deep in the back field!
We took a walk to the dollar store to get some craft supplies for a very secret project!!!

We reviewed the science experiments that we did last week about dissolving, absorption, and mixing liquids.  One of the kids had the idea of testing fish crackers to see if they would dissolve or absorb.  We also watched absorption into a paper towel.

Mixing water and liquid soap...

We finished off the day by making airplanes and measuring how far they flew.
Everyone wrote a sentence about each flight on a dry erase board.

Follow That Star

We have been reading stories about the birth of Christ.  Each story has been written from a different perspective or voice.  One story was told from the perspective of the birds watching, another from the perspective of a lamb in the stable, and another from the perspective of the donkey.  The message is still the same....Follow That Star....

We still have a week left to read some more stories from different perspectives!

Reconciliation

The students have been learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation at school and at their Reconciliation classes at the church (for those making the sacrament at SJV Parish).

As part of our media literacy and religion programs, the students created posters advertising Reconciliation classes.

Success Criteria
Do you have a big message?
Do you have a border?
Do you answer the questions who, what, where, when, why?
Do you have a picture?

They did a great job designing their posters!

What is about 1 metre?

Today's lesson....what is about 1 metre?
What is smaller than 1 metre and what is bigger than 1 metre?

The students took their metre sticks on a walk around the school to find things
about 1 metre, bigger than 1 metre, and smaller than 1 metre.

'This is almost 1 metre...the house is bigger though.'

'The door to get into the boys bathroom is about 1 metre...'

'This door is too!'

'The shelf is a bit smaller than 1 metre.'

'The door is way bigger than 1 metre...but the window in the door is about a metre...'

'This is a lot longer than 1 metre.'

'4 clipboards is exactly 1 metre.'

'The door knob is at 1 metre.'

'This board is about 1 metre.'

'The fountain is less than 1 metre high.'

Stay tuned for our math centers on measurement...

SJV Christmas Tree

HELP US DECORATE OUR CHRISTMAS TREE

The SJV Christmas Tree is up in the foyer near the main office.  We are inviting all families to bring in an ornament with your family name on it to help decorate the tree.  Feel free to make or buy an ornament and hang it up on your way in to school.

Measurement

Fun Friday wouldn't be fun unless we could use our toys to learn something!!!!

The students have been practicing using a ruler to measure items and
draw lines of different lengths.  This is a skill most of us take for
granted, but a skill that requires practice.
Remind your child that to measure something accurately
they must start measuring at zero (not 1).

After measuring, everyone wrote a sentence about their toy using
the word centimetre in their sentence
