More Non-Fiction Research

More Non-Fiction Research
The students are getting really good at finding information
using all of the Non-Fiction Text Features that they
have learned about.
Each group was in charge of learning and recording
important facts about a class of animals.  One group was
in charge of mammals, another was in charge of reptiles,
amphibians, birds and fish.  Each group did a great
job searching and finding information and then presenting
it to the class.

Inventions

At the end of a unit on 3-Dimensional solids the students created
an invention and built it using the 3-D solids.  After building it they
named their invention, wrote about it and described how they built it.
Here is a sneak peak at some of their inventions!

Adding Using Strategies
The students have been practising how to add numbers in their
heads using different strategies to make the addition easier
and faster.  Some of the strategies you can ask your child about are:

Counting On:
Put one number in your head and count up using a number line
 12 + 4 = 16

Doubles:
 4 + 4 + 2 =
4 + 4 =8
8+2=10

Near Doubles:
6 + 7 =
We know 6 + 6 =12
Since 7 is 1 more than 6 we need to add 1 more
12 + 1=13

Making Ten:
  4 + 3 +6 =
 6 + 4 =10
10+3=13

Near Ten:
5 + 6+ 8 =
We know 5 + 5 =10
6 is one more than 5 so we need to add one more
10 + 1=11
11 + 8 =19

Here they are working on strategies.

Cooperation is the name of the game!

Cooperation!
We have been discussing different scenarios that could happen in the school yard, in the classroom or at home that require friends and family members to compromise and cooperate.  The students have spent a lot of time role playing these scenarios and coming up with great ways to solve problems, compromise and cooperate.  Today we played cooperative musical chairs.  The game is played just like traditional musical chairs but no one is allowed to be eliminated.  The chairs are eliminated but not the players.  They need to work together to find a way to keep everyone in the game.  They came up with all sorts of creative ways to cooperate!

Three Dimensional Solids

After learning about many three dimensional solids, the students had an opportunity to build their own solids using marshmallows and toothpicks or straws.  They had to problem solve to make sure the marshmallows represented vertices/corners and the sticks/straws represented the edges.
