Haiku Style

April was poetry month....

...we read poems on our own...

...we read poems with our friends...

...we memorized poems and presented them...

...we wrote our own poems...

The students worked very hard creating their own Haiku poems

about one of Jesus' miracles. 

Their poems were so fantastic, we just had to add some details to their poems.

What are the chances...???

We started a mini unit on probability.  The students enjoyed playing 

spinner games and doing word problems about probability.

'This spinner is unfair...'

'It is very unlikely that palm trees would grow next to an igloo..'

'The spinner needs to land on blue the most...and yellow and blue the same number of times....'

'This is a fair spinner...'

'I'm making a spinner that has a 2 in 3 chance of landing on yellow.'

'There is a 1 in 10 chance I will get the yellow block...'

Maps, maps, and more maps...

The students were put in groups of 4-5 a few weeks ago.  They were asked to make a map.

They had complete creative freedom to make whatever kind of map they wanted.

One group was focused on making sporting facilities, like the Palace.  Another group

made houses for each group member and added trees and parks to their map.

First, the maps were used to learn about perimeter, the distance around an object.

Next, the maps were used to learn about area, the amount of space inside an object.

Then, the maps were used to learn about moving on a grid.

Finally, the maps were sent home.

Way to go everyone!

A little bit of symmetry

Making Symmetrical Designs is always a big hit!!

'It's the same on both sides of the ruler.'

'Symmetry is the same on both sides.'

Flips, Slides, and Turns

Motion Geometry

In motion geometry the grade 2's and 3's are learning the 

mathematical language to describe flips, slides, and turns. 

 A Flip is also called a Reflection

A Slide is called a Translation

A Turn is called a Rotation 

Our math centers this week were all centers to practice grids, symmetry, 

reflections, translations, and rotations.

Center #1: Sorting pictures of reflections, translations, and rotations.

'Look...that one is a turn...not a slide...'

Center #2: Drawing with miras.. 

Center #3: Showing flips, slides, and turns using blocks. 

'So...this is a quarter turn?' 

'If you go all the way around it's called 1 full rotation.' 

'This is a three quarter turn.' 

'This is a three quarter turn too.' 

The last center was a dice game to practice moving on a grid.  

They used directions like up, down, left, and right to 

describe their movements on the grid.

'Go up two..' 

'...and left 6...'

The conversations the students have with each other always amaze me.  

They learn so much from talking to each other and listening to the 

ideas of their peers.
