Measurement
We are starting our new unit in math that is all about measurement.
To launch the unit the students were given the task of figuring out how
big the tops of their desks were.  They were allowed to use any materials
in the classroom that they wanted.  They all had great ideas and used different strategies
to find out how big their desk was.

'I put 30 snap blocks on my desk.'

'I have 48 blocks on my desk.  I used Lego.'

'My desk is 3 rulers tall.'

'I need to measure all the way around my desk.'

'My desk is 12 mini tables wide. Each mini table is 6 centimetres.''

'My desk is 6 and a half one way and 7 and a half the other way.'

'I'm using my pen to measure.'

'I am going to cut the paper to the size of my desk.'

'I'm making a pattern while I measure.'

'My desk is about the same size as the Canadian flag.'

Things we discovered:
There are a lot of ways to measure something.
Everyone's desk is the same size but we all had different answers depending on what we used to measure the desk.
Measuring how many pencils wide was different than measuring how many Lego blocks wide.

Stay tuned for more to come about measurement!
