Helping with the SJV Outdoor Learning Area...opening soon!

Friday was a beautiful day to spend outside helping to prepare
our new outdoor learning space.  The students worked very
hard moving wood chips.

The outdoor learning space will be completed soon...stay tuned!

2-Dimensional Shape Centers

After learning the basics of 2-Dimensional Geometry,
we got to work practicing our skills...

Symmetry

As an introduction to symmetry we read a story called, It Looks Like Spilt Milk.

After the story we 'spilled some milk' and made some symmetrical pictures.
We used white paint to look like milk, created a line of symmetry by
folding our papers and created a symmetrical picture.

Each student wrote about their picture.
"It looks like spilt milk, but it's a butterfly..."

Next, we had a symmetrical building challenge.  Each player
can only build on their side of the ruler.  Player one puts down
a shape on their side.  Player 2 has to 'match' it on the other side
of the ruler.  They made some really cool designs.

Geometry gone wild!

We just couldn't sit inside on such a beautiful day!!!
We are working on 2-dimensional shapes and their attributes so we took it outside.

The students were asked to make shapes using sticks and chalk.
Here is some of their work!

It may look like a pile of sticks but the students built, named, and
described triangles, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, hexagons, pentagons, and rhombus'.

"It's a pentagon house, then I put a stick to show the roof.  Now I have
a trapezoid and a triangle.

"We turned our shapes into a hopscotch!"

"Ours are labelled...here is a pentagon..."

"This one is wierd...it's a rectangle but it's tipped..."
"It's a parallelogram!"

"I made an Inukshuk with my shapes!"

"I made a kitty...I didn't use sticks but I made a picture...look...the
kitty's legs are rhombus', the head is a hexagon, the ears are triangles..."

The kids loved learning this way...and I think they will remember the
names of the new shapes.
