Thanks to Mr. Liburdi!

A great big thanks to Mr. Liburdi for bringing his pet to visit in our class.
Seeing a reptile (bearded dragon) live definitely reinforced what the students
read and learned about reptiles.  Ask your son/daughter about the bearded dragon!!!

Global Communities

Global Communities

The curriculum states that by the end of grade 2 students will...
... compare selected communities from around the world, including their own community, in terms of the lifestyles of people in those communities and some ways in which the people meet their needs

...describe some ways in which two or more distinct communities have adapted to their location, climate, and physical features

...gather and organize information and data about some communities' locations, climate, and physical features, and the ways of life of people in these communities

In order to fulfill these expectations, here are just a few of the
activities, stories, and projects the students worked on.

 Arctic Communities

After reading the story, 'The Lonely Inukshuk', the students built
 their own Inukshuks.

After reading all sorts of stories and using the ipads and computers to research
arctic communities, the students worked together to create a mural illustrating
an arctic community.

They also recorded in words or pictures what life is like in Windsor
compared to life in an Arctic Community.

Hot, Dry Communities

Take a look at some of the stories we read to learn
about communities that are hot and dry...

After reading about a community in Kenya, students designed their
own Ndebele house, just like those seen in Kenya.

We will be studying rain forest communities next....stay tuned!!

Chapter Book Challenge

We started reading Mr. Popper's Penguins a few months ago and that began the class' love of listening to chapter books.  They looked so forward to story time when I would read a chapter aloud.  You could hear a pin drop in the classroom during this time and they always begged to hear more.

Since then we have read 2 books in the series called Dragon Masters, written by Tracey West.  These are great chapter books for kids who are just starting to get into reading chapter books on their own.  The characters' names and the vocabulary are familiar so continuing this series would be a great fit for many of your children who are looking for something new to read (great summer reading idea).

This is what prompted the chapter book challenge in our classroom.  Your child has chosen a chapter book to read during class time and at home.  Once your child is finished reading the book, they will be working on a project to retell the story.  All of this written work will be completed at school.  Our goal is for everyone to be done their book by May 22.  Many students have already finished their book and are starting their project.  Please help your child stay on track reading a chapter each day (depending on the length of the chapters).

Money, Money, Money!

Money, Money, Money!

The students were so excited to be learning about money!
Many students came to grade 2 with a lot of money knowledge and so this
week's math centers needed to address learners at all stages of
learning about money.

Some students were working on skip counting by 5's, and 10's
and only worked with dimes and nickels.
Others were ready to dive into 5, 10, 20, and 50 dollar bills!!

It was so exciting to see so much going on the in the classroom today!

Center #1: Make Money
Pick a card, use coins to show the amount written on the card

Center #2: Coin War
Each person reveals one coin.
Whoever has the highest valued coin wins the round but has to add the two coins together.

Center #3: Dollar Dice
Roll the dice, refer to the chart to see how much money you win, mark it on a 100 chart.
Take turns rolling the dice with a partner.
The first person to get to 100 cents is the winner.

(We didn't use the penny - rolling a one was just 'roll again')

Challenge Center: For anyone who completed the other activites
easily and was ready to be challenged.

Way to go everyone!

Hey, That's Mine!!!
The students have been working hard to learn when to use
apostrophe 's to show possession.  We have been using the
term, 'Hey, That's Mine' to remind us when/why to use 's.

'Hey, that's Joseph's book.'

Guided Reading

Paragraph Writing
The students are writing a paragraph about their toy they invented
and designed last week.

Designing Ndebele houses
After learning about arctic communities, now we are talking
about communities that have a hot and dry climate.  Once community
we studied was a community in Kenya where they build
Ndebele houses.
