As the grade two students prepare for their First Reconciliation at the Church, we will also be learning about the forgiveness of God at school. This week during centres the students had a chance to watch this video and reflect on it.

Friends!
After reading the story The Hickory Chair, the students had a great idea! They wanted to hide notes for each other just like the Grandmother hid notes in the story. So...we wrote friendly notes to our Grade 2/3 friends and hid them outside in the outdoor leaning space. Everyone had a chance to hide their note and find another note written especially for them. Great idea kids!!

Parts of Speech
We have learned about nouns and proper nouns...so we are moving onto adjectives!
We read the story The Hickory Chair and discussed how important it is for
writers to give us a lot of details so we can better understand their message to us, the reader.
We searched for details in the book and discovered that in this story
adjectives really helped us understand the details of this story.
So...to better understand adjectives we used all of our senses to describe things in the classroom.
We heard the 'crinkly' sound of a plastic cookie tray...
...the 'soft', 'silky' feel of baking flour...
...the 'mushy' feel and 'sweet' smell of bananas...
...the 'yummy' and 'delicious' smell of a cookie...
...the 'sticky' and 'wet' feel of an orange...
I think this will help us all remember what adjectives are.
We will be writing descriptive paragraphs next week. Watch for
your child's journal coming home in the next week or two so you can
see their descriptive paragraph.
New Math Unit
Hopefully you have all seen your child's math duotang come home this week with an introduction to our new unit. We have started looking at patterns in the hundred's chart and trying to explain the patterns in words. We have also explored the idea that numbers are made up of groups of tens and groups of ones (groups of hundreds are coming soon!).
It was amazing to see the patterns the students came up with on their own. I always expect the patterns of counting by 2's or all of the numbers have 0's in them, but this group surprised me and found some things I hadn't thought of. Here are a few examples of the surprises I had!

The number in the ones and tens column is the same.
The numbers in the ones and tens column count up by ones as you move in a diagonal.
If you add the ones and tens digits together they each equal 4 (in the first diagonal).
If you add the ones and tens digits together (except the 40) they each equal 13 (in the second diagonal).
We learned a new game called Base 10 Battle. In the game player one rolls
2 dice (one dice for the number of ones and one dice for the number of groups of tens)
and player 2 builds the number using the blocks. The tall blocks represent
groups of tens and the individual blocks are one each. Player 2 states the number
that was built and says the number's base 10 name.
'I have the number thirty one. It's base ten name is three tens and one one.'
'We have twenty three. Two tens and three ones.'
'We have sixty one. Six tens and one one.'
We took our game on the road one day this week. Who knows how many
more nice days like this there will be. I wanted the kids to see that
math is everywhere and we can play and practice wherever we are.
We used long woodchips or sticks to be the groups of ten and small
rocks to be the individual ones. Ask your child to teach you the game.
As time goes on we will be rolling three dice. The third dice will be
groups of one hundreds. I wonder what they will think of to represent
the groups of one hundred...

Walk-Read-Dance-A-Thon SJV Style
Our day started with O'Canada and prayers in the courtyard with the entire school.
We walked the Ganatchio Trail...
...made a pit stop at the park on the way home...
...and danced, danced, danced...
...and all afternoon we read!
Some students read inside their forts.
What a great day!
Thank you to all the families that sent their pledge money into school last week.
If you still have your forms, please return them to school on Tuesday!!
