Descriptive Paragraphs

We have been working hard at becoming more descriptive writers.
Juicy details are what makes our writing more interesting for readers.

What am I...
This was the theme of our descriptive paragraphs.  The students
each described an item of their choice and everyone else had to
guess what they were describing.

They are always so proud to read something they wrote themselves!

Social Studies Fun

The grade 2's have been learning about world communities and
the grade 3's have been learning about the land form regions of Ontario.

The grade 2's shared their knowledge about Northern communities in Canada.
The people rely on Inukshuks to help them find their way.

During indoor recess some students built Inukshuks.
'Look...one arm points to home and the other arm points to
the water where they can find food.'

The grade 3's shared their knowledge of the land form regions of Ontario
through an experiment with plants.  To discover which land form region is
best suited for farming we set up an experiment.

'This will be like a wetland...it has lots of water.'

'This one is just getting dirt...'

'I don't know if anything will grow here...it's full of rocks...'

This 'rock land' is meant to be like much of the land in the Canadian Shield.

Areas of the Hudson Bay Lowlands, St. Lawrence/Great Lakes
Lowlands, and the Canadian Shield have wetlands.

The St. Lawrence/Great Lakes Lowlands has large areas of rich,
fertile soil.

We will see our results over the next week or two!

Math patterns Math patterns Math patterns

During math centres this week, we practised writing about
patterns we see in  hundreds charts.  I was very impressed
how the students explained the counting pattern (counting
by 10's or 5's or 6's, etc) and the patterns they saw in the
ones column and the tens column.

Other  students worked at centres building numbers using base 10 blocks,
filling in the missing numbers on a number line, and skip counting.

Keep practising everyone...we are moving on soon!!

Just a reminder that the pizza day lunch has been postponed.
All money collected will be saved and used for a pizza lunch at a later date.
