Dental health

We have spent some time talking about keeping our teeth clean.
Today we did an experiment to see how sugar affects our teeth.
The egg represented a tooth.  The egg shell was the tooth enamel.

One egg was put in vinegar (bacteria and sugar create acid in your mouth) over night.

Another egg was soaked in orange juice...

...one was in water...

...and another in dark coloured pop.

The egg in pop was stained brown.  The kids brushed the egg with a toothbrush...

...some stain was removed, but not all.

'It's still brown...'

The egg soaked in vinegar turned 'mushy' and 'jiggly'.
The acid ate away the egg shell (just like acid eats away at the enamel of your teeth).

Message of the day...Brush and Floss twice a day and after sugary treats!

Healthy Snack Day

As part of our health curriculum, we decided to make some healthy snacks.  We made whole wheat blueberry muffins and healthy smoothies (with fruit, Greek yogurt, and spinach).

Each group of students was responsible for making a dozen muffins.  Being in small groups was a great problem solving opportunity!!!

When the baking and eating was complete, there were sill leftover muffins.  The class voted on what to do with the leftovers and decided they should cut them in half and eat them (or take their half home).
We couldn't let the opportunity to do muffin math pass us by...how many kids?  How many leftover muffins?  Was there enough to share?  How?  Whole muffins?  Half muffins?  Our final questions was...There are 17 half muffins left.  How many whole muffins does this make?

They worked furiously to figure it out...

Eventually everyone solved the muffin problem and we ate some more!!!!
Thanks to our special parent volunteer who came and helped with our baking
and cleanup!!!

What is an inference?

Ask your child what an inference is...they should tell you...

Schema + Evidence = Inference

Each morning we look at a picture and discuss our observations about what we 'see' in the picture.  Then we use our schema (the knowledge in our brains already) and the evidence (what we see in the picture) to come up with our inference.

Being able to make inferences when we read stories is a valuable tool to help us understand the messages in a story.  An Inference is kind of like 'reading between the lines' to figure out what the author is trying to tell us.

Examples of Inferences:
*A girl walks into a store soaking wet and it is raining. It can be inferred that she does not have an umbrella.
*A child is in bed upstairs. The child's mom hears a bang and crying. The mom can infer that her child fell out of bed.

Picture of the Day

Step One:  Make Observations
'I see a girl in a bathing suit'.
'I see sand toys laying in the sand'
'I see water and blue sky'
'I see a girl wearing a sun hat'

Step Two: Make an Inference
'I think the girl is all done building and now she is going for a swim because
she is walking away from the sand toys.'

What's been happening....

The students worked hard to prepare and present their jokes.
Everyday they were excited to see whose turn it was.

Indoor Recess Fun

What Time is it?
Everyone got a clock and had to turn it into something...

Time to Dance!!

The class split up into groups they chose themselves.  Each group was responsible for making up a dance to perform in front of the class.  We studied other dances before this and practised different movements discussing the elements of dance.
Each group danced to What a Wonderful World.

Getting ready for the 'big performance'.

Performance Day
Everyone worked hard to create a group dance.  Even the
students that were hesitant at first were able to have some fun!!!
