Counting Collections

Counting Collections

Everyone was asked to bring in a collection of items from home.
The collections were all different...some were small and some were quite large,
but everyone was able to find a good way to count their items.

They organized their collections to count by 2's, 5's, or 10's to make it
easier to find the total number of items.

'I counted by 2's...'

'I have a lot of Lego...so I put them in groups of 5...'

'My books are in piles of 2...'

'...I'm going to count the groups now...'

'My marbles are in groups of 10...but I have a few leftover..'

'...my Pokemon collection is big...'

'I have 7 groups of 2 and 1 car leftover....so I have 15 cars.'

'I counted by 5's.'

'I have so many...I put them in groups of 5..'

'I have groups of 10 for my cards...'

The students made an estimate and then counted their items.  Their collections ranged
in size from 8 items to 87 items.
